Room rhymes and lullabies such as Wheels on the bus go round and round and “Baby Bumble Bee” certainly are a traditional part of childhood. But now some parents are searching for kid-friendly tunes with an increasingly substantive, social justice–oriented message.

That’s why mom as well as musician Acacia Sears ditched the woman day job and started off writing progressive music made especially for tots. Going by the girl kid-friendly musical persona, Microsoft. Cacie, Sears started a Kickstarter campaign this week to help fund an entire album of what she message or calls “feminist children’s songs. ”
Sears was inspired to commence her project when she noticed some of the subtle reinforcements of typical gender roles within the lyrics of the schoolyard favorite “The Wheels about the Bus. ” As the mommies usually are told to shush your kids, the daddies say “Keep the child quiet, ” often associated with stern faces. Dissatisfied having a message that overtly affirms maternal figures comfort little ones while dads discipline all of them, Sears started writing her own music with support from friends and family who told her, “the mommies around the bus say smash the particular patriarchy. ”
And her tunes do except. Sears started uploading tunes with acoustic guitar and easy-to-understand lyrics to YouTube recently, including “Princesses Are for everybody, ” which explains that both youngsters can play at dress-up or within the dirt.

Sears has the ability to tackle complex issues and boils them right down to make them not solely understandable but age suitable. Take, for example, “Only Of course Means Yes, ” which often teaches kids about concur. Instead of talking about sexual assault, the song targets hugs, while reminding kids that “only the body belongs to you. ”
Thus, Why Should You Treatment? With more than several songs written about gender identity, anxiety, and the value of character over appears to be, Sears teaches acceptance through song in a format that’s easy with regard to impressionable young minds to absorb.
“My aim is that can help people educate children about being good to one another and themselves, embracing multiplicity, and supporting each additional with understanding and consideration, ” Sears explains on her behalf Kickstarter page. With the songs compiled into a good album, parents can play the accepting tunes on a long car ride making use of their children—which many adults might find far more enjoyable in comparison with say, Kidz Bop albums or one more rendition of “The Itsy Bitsy Index. ”.
